Bereket Gebeyehu
ETHIOPIA, ADDIS ABABA
Bereket Gebeyhu is an Ethiopian artist born in Hawassa Sidama in 1996. Before becoming a professional artist he was an engineering student at Hawassa University for two years before his raging love for art drove him to the capital were he joined Adiss Abeba University Alle school of fine Art and Design. He studied under his favorite professor, an influential modern artist Getachew Yosseph in 2022, and earned his bachelor’s Degree in figurative print making. He says, “I proved everyone who doubted me wrong, once more!” Artist Bereket built a reputation of being “an artist who fell in love with corners of every street he walked on” and his obsession with the homeless’ way of living. He spends most of his outdoor hours roaming around capturing certain moments with his camera which will later be used as references for his Art pieces. When his feet are not hitting his “fellow streets” he can be found in his cozy studio engraving wonders on his rectangular plain worlds.
“The Habit of hard work and consistency is the perfect path to discover the undiscovered…either about our selves or the task we chase to accomplish…this is behind my consistent dedication no matter the hardships faced. ‘The most beautiful experience is mysterious’ which I represent in my work … inserting a fair dose of fascinating ink riddles for the viewers every now and then. I find an exquisiteness in individuals with deformities noting peculiarity in the most ordinary and sophistication in simplicity. I am in search of beauty in the unforeseen. Discovering sweet smiles behind the most frightening frowns, purity in what the society titles as the filthiest and sanity in the craziest. I create a voice for the unheard and power for the weak using my rhythmic art built in several textures, colors and compositions and media. When the rest of the world is too busy getting hypnotized with the dazzling inauthenticity and creating Hyper perfectionalized personalities on the virtual crowd, I manage to function as a highlighter to the Alienated Groups of the society by using my art as breadcrumbs to help us retrace our way back to the raw reality of the world…seeing from a different perspective.”
