Surafel Amare

ETHIOPIA, ADDIS ABABA

Surafel was born in 1987 and a 2010 graduate from Addis Ababa University's Alle School of Fine Arts and Design in graphic art. His art has been included in several group shows in Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, along with two solo shows in Ethiopia. In 2019, he was awarded by the Emerging Contemporary Award (EPI) in Harari, Zimbabwe as one of Africa's three emerging artists. And recently, he participated in a symposium and exhibition titled “Silk Road Artists's Rendezvous,” held in Hangzhou, China, by January 2024.

“I attempt to breathe life into the mechanically arranged features of the world. My art is about revealing the hidden or what seems obvious in his daily life… unveiling the notions of reality as a result of his understanding, perception, outlook, and, above all, experiences. Temporality, consumerism, the choice one makes, redundancy, and rhythm are some of the consequent subjects that I try to address in my artistic works.”
