Mikiyas Sentayhu

ETHIOPIA, ADDIS ABABA

Mikiyas Sintayehu was born in 1998 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, earning a B.A. degree in 2023 in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts from the Addis Ababa University Alle School of Fine Arts and Design. He also holds a diploma in Fine Arts from Entoto Polytechnic College, Addis Ababa (2018) and in 2022 had his first solo show entitled Reflections in Addis Ababa. He has also participated in group exhibitions at varioua venues in Addis Ababa and abroad including the Faculty Club Leuven, (The art Space, 2024, Belgium); Addis Ababa’s - Brazil in Addis Cultural Space (Cube, 2023); Alliance Éthio Française Gallery (Impression of Time, 2023); Hyatt Regency Hotel (Faces, 2021); AAU, Alle School of Fine Arts and Design Gallery (The Tales of Rodari, 2020); Entoto Polytechnic College (Graduation Exhibition, 2018).

He is a studio artist based in Addis Ababa whose experimental paintings explore the effects of technology on the social life and personal space of people mostly of his generation.

“My work is about capturing the diverse range of emotions that people experience when they interact with themselves through the objects they hold in their hands. I aim to question the meaning behind these actions and explore the deeper significance they hold in our lives. Through my paintings, I reflect on my personal experiences and delve into the emotions I felt when I first held a mobile phone. It was a magical human creation that captivated me, and I became lost in its maze-like device over time. This had a profound impact on my social life, as I found myself increasingly connected to this artificial environment we have created called the internet and social media. To bring these concepts to life, I primarily use acrylic and ink mediums. Acrylic dries quickly, allowing me to paint spontaneously and capture the essence of the moment. I want every pattern and line on my paintings to feel like a sketch, reflecting the raw and searching nature of our interactions with technology. I sketch the figures live from my studio, infusing them with an indoor vibe. Once the sketches are complete, I transfer them onto canvas and meticulously depict every spontaneous and searching line. This process allows me to convey the complex emotions and connections I experience in today’s modern, technology-driven world.”
